NOTE ON THE "NAME-THE-SOCK" CONTEST

First of all, I love all your suggestions so far - thanks for all the wonderful entries!

Some of your entries suggest a name that's been a movie title or a character in a book, etc. Even tho' I've been told who's ever going to find out that you named a pattern after something famous, I have to say that I don't feel comfortable using a name that may have been copyrighted or trademarked to someone else.

So, I decided to run two polls at the end of the contest. I feel bad that some of you entered the contest and might not get picked because your suggestion is a great one but has a copyrighted name.

For the winner of the second poll, I will also award some sock yarn, but it won't be Wollmeise, sorry. I only have one skein of the beautiful Campari. So, please don't be mad for maybe ending up in the second poll. Really, I love all your suggestions - but I don't want to get arrested by the knitting police. ;-)

And please continue with all the fabulous entries! This is so much fun!

APRIL - NATIONAL POETRY MONTH

I heard on NPR that April is National Poetry Month. Immediately, I thought about the following poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which I had to memorize in 7th grade... A long, long time ago...

Der Erlkönig

Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind?
Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;
Er hat den Knaben wohl in dem Arm,
Er faßt ihn sicher, er hält ihn warm.

"Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?"
"Siehst, Vater, du den Erlkönig nicht?
Den Erlenkönig mit Kron und Schweif?"
"Mein Sohn, es ist ein Nebelstreif."

"Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir!
Gar schöne Spiele spiel' ich mit dir;
Manch' bunte Blumen sind an dem Strand,
Meine Mutter hat manch gülden Gewand."

"Mein Vater, mein Vater, und hörest du nicht,
Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht?"
"Sei ruhig, bleib ruhig, mein Kind;
In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind."

"Willst, feiner Knabe, du mit mir gehn?
Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön;

"Ich liebe dich, mich reizt deine schöne Gestalt;

Erreicht den Hof mit Müh' und Not;
In seinen Armen das Kind war tot.

I found an English translation for you:

The Erlking

Who rides so late through night and wind?
It is the father with his child.
He has the little one well in the arm
He holds him secure, he holds him warm.

"My son, why hide your face in fear?"
"See you not, Father, the Erlking?
The Erlking with crown and flowing cloak?"
"My son, it is a wisp of fog."

"You sweet child, come along with me!
Such wonderful games I'll play with you;
Many lovely flowers are at the shore,
My mother has many golden garments."

"My father, my father, and do you not hear,
What the Erlking promises me so softly?"
"Be quiet, stay quiet, my child;
The wind is rustling the dry leaves."

"Won't you come along with me, my fine boy?
My daughters shall attend to you so nicely;
My daughters do their nightly dance,
And they will rock you and dance you and sing you to sleep."

"My father, my father, do you not see there,
Erlking's daughters in that dark place?"
"My son, my son, I see it definitely:
It is the willow trees looking so grey."

"I love you; I'm charmed by your beautiful shape;
And if you are not willing, then I will use force."
"My father, my father, now he has taken hold of me!
Erlking has hurt me!"

The father shudders, he rides swiftly,
He holds in arm the groaning child,
He reaches the farmhouse with effort and urgency;
In his arms, the child was dead.

Pretty creepy poem, I always thought...

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

... for several reasons!

This has been a very stressful week at work and I'm glad it's finally Friday. I'm battling a cold and I know I'll need this weekend to sleep and get better and hopefully get rid of the cold. BECAUSE - another stressful week at work is coming up...

And then - I have one more week and I'm leaving for a loooooooooooooooooooooong trip to Germany. There are a couple of major projects I'll be working on for the next two months in our Munich office. It was not really clear until this week for how long I'll be gone. I'll be back for 4th of July. Yup - that's how long I'll be gone. It's for a lot longer than I thought and I'm in a funk right now because everything is happening a little too fast for my pea brain...

Anyway - the "Name the Socks" contest closed on Sunday. I know, I know, the poll should have been posted days ago, but I felt too tired and too crappy to touch the blog after work. I had to go to bed and sleep, sorry. And you people left so many comments with name suggestions. WOW! I have to figure out how to put 30 entries into one poll...

So, be patient with me for a little longer. I'll be putting up the poll this weekend.

In the meantime - the Yarn Harlot, Stephanie Pearl McPhee, was in Atlanta last Sunday, and during her book signing at Knitch, she knitted on my socks that y'all suggested names for:

Yarn Harlot - 04.06.08

Isn't that just fabulous? Hubby asked if I am never going to knit on those socks again because the Yarn Harlot touched them. Hmmm, for once that would be a good excuse to not finish a project...

The poll will be up soon - don't run away!

April 14, 2008

YOUR VOTE, PLEASE!!!

OK, I know it's Monday and I'm sure you were wondering all weekend - where is her damn poll... But I slept through most of the weekend because of my cold (which is still present) and I'm still at work to catch up with all the things I couldn't do last week because of the preparations for this week. Sounds crazy, but I feel crazy... Sorry for the whining...

So, with no further ado, I proudly present the poll:

Because there were so many GREAT suggestions, there are two boxes of choices for the first category, and it's possible to vote once in each box. I heartily encourage you NOT to do this. Please vote for only ONE entry from among the 30, then click the "Vote" button in that entry's box. DON'T click the vote button in the box of entries you didn't choose from. Then vote for one of the entries in the third box (the proprietary-ish names). Let's keep it fair, OK? (BTW, voting is limited to once per IP address.)

Voting begins RIGHT NOW, and goes until midnight on Thursday, April 17, 2008.

Category 1 (for the Wollmeise sock yarn):

Category 2 (for some lovely Koigu sock yarn - see picture below)

Koigu Sock Yarn

Oh, and these are the stats for the Koigu sock yarn:
Koigu Painter's Palette Premium Merino
100% merino wool / 175 yards per skein
dye code P217 / dye lot 118

Have fun with the poll!

And as little Eric Cartman would say (remember I'm still in the office on Monday evening and it's almost 8pm): "Screw you guys, ah'm goin' home!"

FREEZE WARNING

#?§$%&!!!

It's April 16 - and this morning North Georgia had a freeze warning. Well, I don't mind because I get to wear my sweaters a little longer. ;-) Well, actually, with my stay in Germany for 10 weeks, I'll extend my sweater-wearing season anyway.

And speaking of sweaters, I finished the Neiman sweater last week. Of course, it's not on my Mission Possible 2008 list. Somehow it seems to be so much more fun to start and finish things that are NOT part of that list. I'm starting to wonder if I'll be a drop-out from that Ravelry group after all... We'll see. I have to make a list of stuff that I'm going to take to Germany. Hopefully, I can make myself include a bunch of those projects to get them finished, off the list and off my conscience...

So, here is Neiman:

FO - Neiman Sweater

Stats:
Needles: US 2 / 2.75 mm and US 2½ / 3.0 mm (Addi Turbo Circulars)
Yarn: Knit Picks Palette
How much? 5 skeins = 1155.0 yards (1056.1m)
Colorway: Black
How much? 1 skeins = 231.0 yards (211.2m)
Colorway: Tidepool Heather

Pattern modifications:
I started out with the size E (chest circumference 40) and instead of going back up to size E after the waist decreases, I only went up to the size D (chest circumference 38). I also didn't close up the sleeves all the way, I left the edge open to show the color work inside a little better. To get that effect, I started knitting in the round for the sleeves after I finished the edge. I also added more rows and a couple more decrease rows to the yoke because I wanted my neckline to be less open. Oh, and I made the sweater two inches longer.

And lastly, a modification by mistake... The chart for the yoke colorwork has you knit one row twice and I somehow didn't see that. So my colorwork looks a little different, but I like it.

FO - Neiman Sweater

One more day to vote on the sock names. Make sure you get your vote in before midnight tomorrow!

AND THE WINNERS ARE...

The polls are closed and we have winners! Sounds almost like a presidential race, doesn't it? ;-)

No Name SOCKS

Winner in category 1 with 26 votes - TIGRIS WYVERN by Katey

Katey wrote for her entry:
Tigris Wyvern
(Dragon Tiger in Latin)

Congrats Katey - you will receive the skein of Wollmeise sock yarn!

Winner in category 2 with 18 votes - HOBBES by Alma

Alma wrote for her entry:
Looks like a playful tiger to me. What about my favorite tiger "Hobbes"?

Congrats Alma - you will receive the two skeins of Koigu Painter's Palette Premium Merino sock yarn!

Hopefully, I'll see you two before I leave for Germany on April 27. I would love for you to have the sock yarn before I'm gone. I emailed both of you - look in your inbox.

That was fun - thanks to all of you who participated for your entries and your votes!

HAPPY FRIDAY!

THE LUCKY LADIES

Here they are! Yes, the contest winners got their goodies yesterday:

The sock contest winners!

CONGRATS LADIES!
Hope to see some socks soon ;-)

Yesterday was my last Sunday at Knitch for a really long time. How sad... But I have two more evenings this week until I say my good-byes this Friday.

Sunday afternoon I'm off to Germany. This week, I will have to ponder what yarn and projects to bring. I started a few things that will definitely wander into my bag(s) for the trip.

Number One:

Well, now, even I have finally started a Clapotis. Four years after the hype about this pattern. One could argue that I'm always behind because I come from a small village in the Bavarian alps. And you know how long it takes until trends make it into the very last corner. But at the time the pattern I came out, I already lived in Georgia. So, not really an excuse for me. Except that I now I finally have a need and some stash yarn that is perfect for this project:

Gaplaetscher

I looked up the German word for Clapotis (French for "rippling" or "splashing") - it's Geplätscher. So, I will be knitting Dunkles Geplätscher meaning dark rippling. The name works well with the jet-black baby alpaca/silk blend I got out of my stash for this project. I'm already past the increases and almost on ball 3 (out of 12). This wrap will keep me warm at the office. I'm always freezing because of the air conditioning.

Number Two:

I found a great pattern in one of my Interweave Knits magazine. To be exact, it was in the Winter 2000/2001 issue. It's called Tweedy Aran Cardigan by Norah Gaughan:

Red Jacket Red Jacket

Actually, it's currently available in the Limited Edition Reader’s Choice - Top 5 e-Book. The collection also includes a free version of Kate Gilbert's Sunrise Circle Jacket, Stefanie Japel's Cable-Down Raglan, Evelyn A. Clark's Swallowtail Shawl and Norah Gaughan's Nantucket Jacket. I like all five patterns a lot!

But beware, this downloadable collection is available only until May 14, 2008. So you better hurry and download the file if you want a free copy of the pattern collection.

I'm using Jen's Xmas gift - a lovely gigantic hank of Mountain Colors Weaver's Wool with 1450 yards. The colorway is called rosehip. At first, I was a bit worried that the pattern would be too busy for the varigated yarn. But after Hubby and Jen looked at it yesterday and both supported my choice, I feel more confidient that it'll look good once it's finished.

And last but not least, I'm knitting on a cute little ruffled scarf with some wonderful silk I bought last year at SAFF. I wanted a quick knit with lovely yarn - this is what I came up with:

Aria Scarf Aria Scarf

Yes, the yarn is as yummy as it looks... It's a hank of Miss Babs silk yarn. The pattern is called Aria and it's from the book Knitting New Scarves. If you're into knitting scarves and you like to experiment with new designs, this book is a must-have.

And a FO to round out this blog entry:

I knitted socks for Jacquie for her birthday a couple of weeks ago. Of course, I couldn't blog about the socks because she would have found out and that would have ruined the surprise. I was thinking for quite a while about what to give her for her birthday. Jacquie is a person who either has everything or buys herself what she wants. BUT - she doesn't have a pair of hand knitted socks. She started her first sock a very long while back and I think it's buried in one of her knitting baskets for now. So I figured, that's a good idea. Unfortunately, I had that good idea only two weeks before her birthday... To make a long story short - I finished the socks during my lunch break on her birthday and she got the socks that night. Close call, but hey, finished in time. And they fit her, too!

Jacquie's Birthday Socks

And I think Simba likes them, too. ;-)

So, here are the stats:

Pattern: Simply Love by Anni Design
Made for Jacquie (her birthday gift)
Size: 8.5
Needle: US 0 / 2.0 mm
Yarn: ShibuiKnits sock yarn
How much? 2 skeins = 382.0 yards (349.3m)
Colorway: orange/reds/pinks

Modification:
I knitted a shorter cuff because I know Jacquie doesn't like long cuffs on her socks. :-)

Jacquie's Birthday Socks

Have a great week!

KNITTING IN MUNICH

Well, this is all Famous Steve's fault... he created a monster yesterday. ;-) During the day, I noticed that he changed his Ravelry avatar and I complimented him on it. His new avatar looks like Famous Steve, but as a fourth grader from South Park - so cool. When I asked him how he got a South Park avatar, he told me where to go online to get my own, and later on I had a bit of time to get creative.

First, I came up with a regular one - with my blog theme, me and the poochies:

Knitting Without Dog Hair Is Not An Option

Then I thought I should do something different for the time I'll be gone, and I came up with a Bavarian theme...

Bavgirl goes to Germany

And then Famous Steve twisted my arm really bad and made me join the Ravelry group called South Park-a-teers. I'm still amazed what groups you can find on Ravelry... I'm sure I mentioned before that Hubby and I totally love South Park, and we buy every season on DVD as soon as it's released.

So, since I'm going to be in Munich for such a long time, I wanted to find a bunch of yarn stores and knitting groups over there. And thanks again to Ravelry, I found both. I figured I should be prepared for the 10 weeks and have a place to shop and to hang out with local knitters. Which doesn't mean I don't love my local knitting buddies anymore, I hope you know that. It's more like an addict who needs to find a support group away from her regular support group. ;-)

While searching for the local Stitch N' Bitch group in Munich, I found Victor on Ravelry, who is the organizer of three meet-ups in Munich. He was just on German TV to talk about knitting and I'm sure you know him from the Knitters Uncensored Podcast.

This is his clip from the German TV station:

And you can find an English translation of the dialogue on Victor's blog. And while you're there, go drool over his gorgeous knitting and spinning projects. I can't wait to meet him and his knitting group in Munich.

I also came up with a list of projects that I'd like to take to Germany. 10 projects for 10 weeks - makes sense, right?

Here's my list:

Started in June 2007 - Bayerische Socks by Eunny Jang
Status: Sock 1 is done and I'm past the heel on no. 2

Started in Jluy 2007 - Twisted Flower Socks by Cookie A.
Status: Sock 1 is done and I need to start no. 2

Started in November 2007 - Bartholomew's Tantalizing Socks by Cat Bordhi
Status: Sock 1 is done and I need to start no. 2

Started in January 2008 - Boot Socks (my own design with German boomerang heel)
Status: Sock 1 is done and I'm on way to the heel from the toe up on no. 2

Started in January 2008 - Argyle Socks (my own design)
Status: I'm working on sock 1

Started in February 2008 - Tigris Wyvern Sock (my own design)
Status: Sock 1 is done and I'm past the heel on no. 2, halfway into the cuff

Started in March 2008 - La Digitessa by Yarnissima
Status: I was past the heel on sock 1 but had to rip back

Started in April 2008 - Aria Scarf from Knitting New Scarves
Status: The hank of silk is more than half gone

Started in April 2008 - Dunkles Geplätscher - the Clapotis from Knitty, Fall 2004
Status: I'm on ball 3 of 12

Started in April 2008 - Tweedy Aran Cardigan from Interweave Knits, Winter 2001/2002
Status: I cast on for the back and I'm just past the beginning of the waist decreases

It would be awesome if I could get all the socks finished while I'm away and then I'll come back with 7 (!) pairs of socks. Three of them are actually on the Mission Possible 2008 list. YAY for that!

Plus I'm contemplating taking the two hanks of gorgeous sea silk I bought at SAFF last year to knit Muir. Hopefully, I can fit everything into my luggage... I sure sound like I'll never find a yarn store in Munich...

DAY 1 - LEAVING ATLANTA

Day 1

This was the view from the plane before leaving the Atlanta airport. I am going to try to post a picture a day as a little diary for the ten weeks I'm away. Hopefully, I can keep up with it. :-) I have high hopes!

DAY 2 - THE FIRST DAY IN MUNICH

Day 2

This is the view from my office onto the pedestrian zone in the heart of Munich.

I arrived safely this morning - and so did my two large suitcases and my two carry-ons. The sun is shining and it is supposed to be in the mid 60s. Too bad I have to work instead of sipping cappucino in that café below. ;-)

DAY 3 - GOT A PRESENT

Day 3

When I got to my friend's (now roomie for the next ten weeks) yesterday, she gave me a little gift. A cow mug and a cute card - to make me feel at home in her home. I just love her! The card says in German:

"Men can't listen - I am lucky that I have you."

AWWWWWWWWWW...

DAY 4 - MARIENPLATZ, MUNICH

Day 4

I took the picture this morning at the Marienplatz, one of the very famous spots in the center of Munich. On my way to the old office location, I walked by this building every day.

I am pretty exhausted today because I worked 13 hours straight yesterday packing around 80 boxes with heavy binders. And we had to catalog 40 of these boxes because they will go into an archive in the basement. Don't ask me how coordinated the move has been so far. Tomorrow is a bank holiday in Germany - actually three days fall together: Labor Day, Ascension Day and Father's Day. Therefore, I'll have a day off - and I think it's well deserved. ;-) My roomie organized a brunch and then a hike along the river. We'll see how well I can move tomorrow.
