CONTEST - NAME THE SOCKS

Okidoki - here we go. Ready?

I am looking for a name for a pair of socks. The design is my own. Here is a peek at the socks in progress:

No Name SOCKS

And this is a close up of the pattern:

No Name SOCKS

I am knitting with Zwerger Garn Opal Regenwald / Rainforest (Colorway Tiger) and the pattern is based on Barbara Walker's "Dragon Scales".

Now, put your thinking caps on (as Lily Chin would say) and come up with a name for these socks. The contest will be closed on Sunday April 6, 2008, at midnight. After that I will run a poll with all entries to vote on. The name with the most votes will win some yarn and the person who came up with the name will be mentioned in the pattern, once it is written up.

What is the prize??? Sock yarn, of course. The winner will get a skein of Rohrspatz & Wollmeise 100% Merino Superwash hand-dyed (574 yards). The color is called Campari Orange. I bought this color because it is one of my favorite drinks. ;-)

I think the dyer did an execllent job in getting the colors right - look at the old Campari ad I found:

campari-aperatif

Good luck to all the participants!

I can't wait to see all the cool names you come up with. By the way, I was not able to tie up the hank of yarn as tight as it came from Germany after I took the pictures... I guess that's a special skill.

well, going with the dragon scale theme, how about Smaug Socks? after the dragon from The Hobbit? :)

Cynthia:

How about "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Socks"?

I couldn't resist!

Flying Dragon...the stripes look like wings to me.

Helen:

"Burning Bright" from Blakes's "Tiger, tiger burning bright..." poem.

Carrie:

How about "Waverly Wing Socks", they remind me of waves on the ocean and scales on dragon wings. And I like how it sounds when I say it ;>)

I'm suggesting "Mystical Bengal" for your socks. I LOVE the way the pattern complimented that yarn.

I have multiple suggestions:

Maja und der Regenwurm
(after the 1970's German kids show)

Tigris Wyvern
(Dragon Tiger in Latin)

Oh, I was too late with my same idea of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

How about "Gargoyle"? I can imagine a nice one as a cross between a tiger and a dragon. My first thought was Griffin, but that's a lion and an eagle...

A google search did yield this somewhat hilarious (to me) art:

I also thought of:

"Predator Peds"

Sirrush

(Also known by the name Mushussu, Sirrush is the Babylonian dragon of chaos. This creature has the front feet of a cat, claws of a bird for hind feet, as well as a serpent-like body, and scaly head. There is a figure of Sirrush on the Ishtar Gate of Babylon, which Cryptozoologists believe is a representation of living dinosaurs.

Campiness comes to mind:

Tiger Beat

How about Tiger Scales?

Michele

ann:

I say

Tigress Scallops though there are tinges of zebra in there too.

Drue:

How Bout

Tiger Paws

"Nocturnal Slayer"

Meg:

May I suggest cat nip. ;-)

How about Tiger Smiles

Eve:

Purring Tiger, Sleepy Tiger?

Looks like a playful tiger to me. What about my favorite tiger "Hobbes"?

I'm also submitting "Fred". My boyfriend says it's a good name.

Doug:

How about

"A Tiger In Sheep's Clothing"

OMG - that's a good one.

Socks make me Smile :-)

Eve Miller:

Also: Hold that Tiger

MsAbalama:

Roarin Socks
Tigger Paws
MEOW!

Pat McMahon:

Three from columm A:
Safari Socks
Afrika Socks
Roar of the Beast Socks

One from columm B: Shere Khan

Pat McMahon:

OOOh...oooh...oooh.
Better one:
These socks make me think of those Nature shows about Africa- the hazy landscapes with the rising heat waves and the herds of wildebeast, zebra, and giraffe in the distance. So: Veldt

Pat McMahon:

How many times can I do this? I think I'm on a roll-
On the Prowl
or
Walk on the Wild Side
or
Ennie, meenie, mynie, moe (catch a tiger by the toe)
